Work experience while you study

Our work integrated learning programs give you essential job-ready skills and experiences as part of your degree. Whether its undertaking pro bono professional legal experience or gaining valuable on-the-job work placements through our community engagement, Consultancy Hub, and business internship programs, we help you to launch your career before you graduate. And by taking part in WIL activities you’ll gain valuable experience and receive 10-20 credit points towards your degree.

What is work integrated learning?

Work integrated learning (WIL) is an umbrella term which covers a variety of work-ready experiences which provides students with an opportunity to put classroom learning into practice. Our WIL program gives you a competitive edge by equipping you with the employability skills highly sought after by employers. Industry engagement is also an integral aspect of WIL and is embedded in all our law and business programs.

WIL experiences on offer

  • Placements: work in industry, legal, professional or community organisations.
  • Simulations: practice your skills in a simulated workplace setting, on or off campus, such as business interviewing, negotiating or mooting.
  • Assessment activities: our assessment activities are designed to simulate the practical work undertaken in business and legal workplaces.
  • WIL projects: collaborate with industry, community and government departments to undertake consulting and research projects with industry partners.
  • International study tours: take part in an individual or group overseas study tour to experience different workplace cultures. You’ll meet with government, private and community organisations and take part in volunteering, community service, pro bono work or project-based activities.
  • Networking events: gain direct access to industry guest speakers, barristers, judges and business leaders to grow your professional networking skills.
  • Student Consultancy Hub: students can participate in projects remotely.

Business experience

Community engagement

When you study business with us, you’ll learn more than just facts and figures. You’ll learn business practices that contribute to the common good. As part of your degree you’ll work and interact with vulnerable clients through our Community Engagement: Building Strengths and Capabilities unit. By applying your skills to a community group you’ll gain valuable on-the-ground experience and the opportunity for personal growth.

Professional experience

Gain practical experience and prepare for the future of work in your chosen profession. The Peter Faber Business School Professional Experience unit gives you the opportunity to work with a variety of corporate, government and not-for-profit organisations in fields such as accounting, marketing, IT, management, human resources and finance. You will also develop a portfolio, and hone your resume and interviewing skills.

Law experience

Pro bono legal practice

As part of your legal studies you will take part in pro bono legal services. This service will give you an unrivalled opportunity to experience and reflect upon the practice of law in a real-world setting. You’ll work with some of the community’s most disadvantaged, making a positive contribution to individuals and their families, as well as gaining valuable work experience.

Student Consultancy Hub

During these extraordinary and unprecedented times ACU's Faculty of Law and Business has launched a Student Consultancy Hub to enable our business, law and information technology students to participate in projects remotely. The hub will help address the challenges students face finding placements during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Projects include:

Impact for Women 

Information technology and business students from Melbourne and Sydney are working on a marketing plan and website design project aimed at increasing advocacy and fundraising for Impact for Women, a not-for-profit organisation supporting Victorian women and children fleeing from extreme violence at home.

Brisbane Paralympic Football Program (BPFP)

BPFP is collaborating on many virtual projects with our business and law students. Students will be developing and reviewing HR policies for the not-for-profit organisation and providing various other pro bono legal services.

The Highered Masterclass webinar series provides students an insight to effectively manage the next steps towards advancing their careers.

Assessment report

Highered offers a complimentary online assessment test for students. After completing the four tasks required (work related behaviour, numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, vocational interests and motivation) students will have access to a 17-page career report. Evaluating performance and receiving feedback on verbal, numerical and logical reasoning ability tests will help students to practice for real test situations and gain insights into their strongest aptitudes.
