Associate Professor Clive Harfield

Originally a mediaeval archaeologist and historian, Associate Professor Harfield subsequently served 20 years in various UK police organizations as an operational officer and police manager in local, national, and international roles. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to research mutual legal assistance in transnational criminal investigation at Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA in 2001, in which year he was also the first British officer to participate in the 'Management of Serious Crime' course at the Australian Federal Police College, Barton. Between 2004-2008 he was a Visiting Lecturer at the Norwegian Police University College, Oslo, teaching there twice each year. Since relocating to Australia in 2008, he has taught at the University of Wollongong, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and he was an Adjunct Professor at the T C Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland. He has undertaken criminal justice sector capacity-building work in Bangladesh and in Papua New Guinea as part of Australia's international aid programs, and is a member of the UK National Police Ethics Committee. Dr Harfield's research interests include the governance, management, and ethics of investigation, particularly covert investigation methods.
