The Australian Literacy Clinic provides evidence-based assessments and interventions for children, adolescents and adults with reading and spelling difficulties and delivers professional development opportunities for teachers and clinicians supporting people with literacy problems.
Drawing on our deep scientific knowledge and research-based expertise we provide tailored assessments that directly respond to a person's reading and spelling strengths and weaknesses. From these test results we provide straightforward reports with research-based recommendations for interventions that target a person's specific needs.
Taking the whole person into account we recognise that people with reading and spelling difficulties also have problems with spoken language, attention, and anxiety about literacy. As such, we also conduct screening tests for these problems.
About Us
Around 16% of students have reading and/or spelling problems that prevent them from fully accessing the curriculum (e.g., McArthur & Castles, 2017). For example, a student's reading might be too poor to be able to read and comprehend the instructions to complete their schoolwork.
The Australian Literacy Clinic is a not-for-profit organization hosted by the Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy at Australian Catholic University. ACU has one of the largest concentrations of reading researchers in the world who are conducting cutting edge research on the typical and atypical acquisition of reading and spelling, their assessment and remediation. The Australian Literacy Clinic is integrated into this research and its core business is to translate research findings into practice. The Australian Literacy Clinic provides evidence-based assessments and interventions, and it conducts professional development activities for people working with children, adolescents and adults with reading and/or spelling difficulties.
