About Teaching Areas

The Teaching Areas listed here are a simplified interpretation of the complex interplay between the teacher accreditation requirements in each state and the availability of study areas at ACU on each campus. Think of them as sequences of units that are required to teach a particular subject in secondary school in your state.

For example, in NSW a teacher of History must be a specialist in either Ancient or Modern History. Archeology also meets the requirements for Ancient History. When you follow the sequence of units for one of these areas, you will meet the state government requirements to teach that subject in secondary school. However, in ACU terms, you will be studying the History or Archeology major or minor as listed in the Bachelor of Arts.

Some teaching areas are only available in the Teaching Area 1 group, some only in the Teaching Area 2 group and some are in both. So make sure you check the list carefully and if you need more advice please contact your friendly Course Coordinator. When you have decided on your teaching area/s, find the relevant unit/s in the Table of Units.
