Students studying psychology must understand ethical principles and act ethically.

Justification of inherent requirement:

Protection of the public is a guiding principle of psychology courses accredited by Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. A good understanding of ethics is essential for the protection of the public.

• Demonstrate knowledge of psychological and research ethics and ability to reflect on ethical dilemmas.

Resilience and good emotional regulation is required to work individually and in teams in changing and unpredictable environments. Students may be exposed to emotionally challenging and intellectually demanding situations and examples of human suffering. They will be required to have behavioural stability to manage these events objectively.

Effective and efficient verbal communication, in English, is an essential requirement of the course

• Comprehension of spoken English delivered at conversational speed
• Ability to communicate clearly, audibly and intelligibly in English.
• Ability to communicate respectfully with people of different gender, sexuality and age, and from diverse cultural, religious, socio-economic and educational backgrounds.

The ability to understand and communicate verbally with others is needed for obtaining information and when working in teams.

Being sensitive to individual and/or cultural differences displays respect and empathy to others and develops trusting relationships that are important in psychology.
