Philosophy of mind is a highly interdisciplinary area of study, with links to areas such as psychology, cognitive science, computer science, and artificial intelligence (AI). It’s concerned with questions surrounding the general nature of mind (and the human mind in particular), the relationship of mind and body, the nature and workings of consciousness, personal identity, language, certain mental states, artificial intelligence, and the intersection of the intellect, emotions and the will. Is the mind a way of speaking the workings of the physical brain, or is it an independent and immaterial entity? Do non-human beings share some features and functions of consciousness – and how could we ever tell? You’ll explore these fundamental questions and more as you grapple with a prominent contemporary area of philosophy.
Philosophy of mind is a great way to approach emerging fields in technology, psychology, computer programming and business from a philosophical standpoint. You’ll be introduced to established dialogues with these fields, while developing a range of in-demand skills such as critical thinking, creativity, abstract reasoning and problem-solving. It can also be useful as part of a philosophy double-degree, combined with a vocational area such as law, education, business or theology. You can also take your academic studies to the next level by pursuing postgraduate study.
