Youth work is an exciting and challenging career involving working for, and with, young people in a variety of rewarding ways. Youth work acknowledges the social and cultural environments where young people live and helps foster their emotional and social development, and our course encourages critical thinking about the environments young people live in.
Our course explores the complex issues that many young people face including homelessness, mental health, poverty and resettlement in a new country. You will receive valuable practical experience in working with young people, in addition to the theoretical insights and practical competencies needed for dealing with the needs, problems and aspirations of young people.
A specialisation in youth work does more than meet the growing need for youth workers. You’ll be given the experience you need to make a positive impact for people who need it most. As a youth work student at ACU, you’ll be immersed in a practical, hands-on degree with field placements and industry connections to local youth support services in Melbourne.
Nicola Parkes has dedicated her life to supporting people with a refugee experience. After completing her degree, she began working for The Centre for Multicultural Youth in Melbourne, where she supported unaccompanied minors from Afghanistan who had come to Australia by boat. She went on to spend the next few years in a range of youth work positions in both Melbourne and Brisbane.
