What is a STAT?

The Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a two-hour, multiple choice, aptitude test that helps applicants demonstrate their potential for tertiary study.

The test is widely accepted and used by many Australian institutions and a STAT result may improve your chances of selection for your course.

How do I register to take a STAT?

All states and territories regularly hold STAT tests and you can register to sit the next test in your state or territory through the STAT webpage.

The website has more information on the STAT test including associated fees and how to prepare.

Should I complete a STAT?

You may find that STAT improves your case for tertiary entry. Low STAT results are ignored, so sitting the STAT can only be an advantage to your application.

You should consider sitting a STAT if you have no formal educational qualifications and you are applying for entry on the basis of work or life skills alone.

You may also consider sitting the STAT if you have completed the following:

  • senior external examination subjects
  • competency-based training course/s
  • Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation.

Please note, that the STAT will not combine with your other qualifications for a selection rank. The STAT will be reviewed separately with its own selection rank the same as with all your other qualifications.

Competency-Based Training (CBT)

A number of tertiary institutions, TAFE and registered training organisations (RTOs) have CBT, where students receive results of 'competent' and not yet 'competent'. If you are undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or degree course in which the assessment is competency-based, you may wish  to sit the STAT to potentially improve your competitiveness by having a new selection rank generated from your STAT score.

Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation

The Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation (ATP) is a preparatory course conducted by TAFE Queensland and some private providers. A STAT result cannot be combined with the results from this certificate to improve your selection rank. You may wish to sit the STAT if you wish to improve your competitiveness by having a new selection rank generated from your STAT score.

Subject prerequisites

The STAT may also be used to satisfy the English subject prerequisites. It cannot be used to satisfy any other subject prerequisite.
