Our partnership involves a three-year collaboration program around scholarships, promotion of diversity and inclusion, guest lectures in areas such as cybersecurity, ethical banking or budgeting, opportunities for student internships and work placement, innovation, and translational research projects towards ethical and positive societal impact.
Like ACU, Teachers Mutual Bank Limited (TMBL) is values based, with a strong focus on ethical, responsible and sustainable practices.
Commencing in 2022 TMBL established three ACU Scholarships after its subsidiary organisations; Teachers Mutual Bank, Health Professional Bank and UniBank. These scholarships aim to provide financial support for teachers, nurses and those wanting to pursue further qualifications in their chosen field.
The scholarships are equity based and provide an opportunity for students who may have overcome barriers to Higher Education to access assistance.
With support of our partners, the successful ACU scholarships program is back in 2024.
Teachers Mutual Bank, Health Professionals Bank and UniBank have each provided a $5,000 scholarship for ACU students. Undergraduate and postgraduate students in disciplines of Education, Graduate Nursing and Postgraduate study are eligible to apply.
These banks are supporting ACU's students who are Australia's future teachers and healthcare workers, which is a mission alignment between the three member-owned banks and our university-we're dedicated to the common good, dignity and better outcomes for society.
Jodie Hayden, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Teachers Mutual Bank Limited commented that these scholarships reflect the values of the bank.
"We are a bank for good, for those who do good, and these three scholarships help us achieve this purpose. It's a privilege to offer support to three dedicated students in their studies, who will go on to make an immeasurable difference to our society, especially in health and education."
In 2023, third year Bachelor of Education (Secondary) student, Stephanie, was awarded the Teachers Mutual Bank scholarship. Stephanie is majoring in Mathematics and Visuals Arts and states the $5,000 scholarship, "helped me attend professional workshops, purchase textbooks, behavioural management books and Math education books for teachers such as "The Elephant in the Classroom" by Jo Boaler."
Stephanie remarked that "The reason why I wanted to pursue this career is that I want to help my future students find the courage to persevere even when a situation seems hard. I want to help unlock the mathematicians within them and strengthen their resilience the same way my Maths teacher, Ms Khattar did for me."
Students should be encouraged to apply for scholarships and take some advice from a previous scholarship awardee, "You have to be in it to win it. Prior to coming to ACU I didn't think I was 'smart' enough to get a scholarship, but I realised that mindset was limiting. Tell your truth, your story and give it your best shot."
