The role of faith in ‘comfort women’ activism in Australia

Overview

This project examines the role of religious practices in Korea and Australia, particularly by and for women. Its focus on this form of activism importantly allows to explore how this religious engagement intersects with Korean migrant community identity in Australia, the fifth largest host country of Korean migrants, and with a broader, global human rights movement surrounding ‘comfort women’.

Project aim

The outcomes sought from this project are to:

• identify influences of faith on perception and experience of gendered violence or activism as understood by survivors and activists;
• identify differences in understanding religious teaching or distinctions of time or location, if any.
