Perla is a full-time academic at the Thomas More Law School. She teaches foundations of law and legal research, contract law, family law, legal ethics, legal theory, among other subjects. Her research interests include international human rights law, the rights of irregular migrants and their intersection with international criminal law.
Admitted to legal practice in Mexico in 2008, Perla holds an LLM in International Crime and Justice, from the University of Turin, Italy, in collaboration with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). She also earned an LLM in common law and a PhD from La Trobe University in Australia, where her doctoral research focused on the protection of transit migrants' rights in Mexico and the international responsibility of the State to safeguard them. This research currently being edited for publication as a book.
Prior to her tenure in Australia, Perla served as a legal counsel and barrister in Mexico, worked as legal officer at the National Human Rights Commission, and later at the human rights branch of the Attorney General's Office in the Federal Government of Mexico.
Perla is an editor of the Australian Feminist Law Journal and is currently involved in various research projects within the Thomas More Law School, including research that explores the involvement of Australian Non-Governmental Organisations in proceedings before the UN Committee for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
