Originally from Goa, India, Rohan chose ACU because he was impressed by the course content in the Bachelor of Commerce. Now that he’s a fully-fledged ACU student, he’s realising there’s more to an ACU degree than what happens in the classroom.
You’re studying the Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Accounting. What inspired you about this course?
Growing up, I always had a passion for working in business or running my own firm. I felt that accounting would give me the key skills required to succeed. Accounting is a language of business — almost every organisation nowadays needs accountants to understand their financials in order to make informed decisions.
Why did you choose ACU?
I chose ACU because the accounting and business degrees are very well regarded. They’re accredited by relevant professional bodies like CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. The degrees also have good professional placements and other professional opportunities that will give me the necessary accounting skills to land a job upon completing my degree.
Now that you’ve been at ACU for a while, what stands out about your study experience?
I feel what distinguishes ACU from other universities are things like flexible class schedules, supportive lecturers and fewer students in a classroom. I had always assumed the classes would be huge, but it’s usually 10–20 students and sometimes even less. If students are looking for a university where they can get support and improve their self-confidence, I would recommend they come to ACU.
Speaking of support, what sort of support services are available on campus?
ACU currently offers many services for international students such as the Careers Hub, where international students can find jobs to apply on campus and get help to write and update their CVs, and Studiosity, where students can get help with their academic writing. There’s also a good library.
When you’re not studying, how do you like to spend your time?
I’m a member of the McAuley Student Association Brisbane, a student club for people who are interested in joining events, socialising and having a good time on campus. In my first year, I volunteered for a club called ACU Student Life for a semester, supporting new students during orientation and helping to organise events on campus. Now, I’m an executive member of the McAuley Student Association club working as a secretary. There are just so many opportunities that ACU can offer you. It’s really good for students coming here.
