Associate Professor Tim Moore joins ICPS

Internationally recognised child and youth researcher and children’s rights advocate Tim Moore has been welcomed back to ACU’s Institute of Child Protection Studies as deputy director.

Associate Professor Moore’s appointment will strengthen the Institute’s work in research and practice into the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

As deputy director, he will support director Professor Daryl Higgins and lead a team of research specialists and trainers.

Professor Higgins said the new role would help further expand the Institute’s work and influence nationally and internationally.

“Tim’s appointment means we can further build and grow our ground-breaking work to continue the much-needed evidence-base in this critical area and support translation and implementation into policy and practice,” Professor Higgins said.

“His extensive skills in working collaboratively will be a great asset for the Institute which works closely with other stakeholders to promote safeguarding and child-centred strategies in youth-serving organisations.”

Associate Professor Moore will manage, develop and implement an applied research strategy that he helped to establish in an earlier position with the Institute.

He has worked directly with children, young people and families focusing on research underpinned by a commitment to promoting their needs, views and experiences and supporting the development of practices, policies and programs that respond to them.

Much of his work has actively involved children and young people in its design and as beneficiaries, underpinning a deep empathy and respect for the child’s point of view.

“For too long, children and young people have been excluded from research and the decisions that affect their lives,” he said.

"This has meant that we've often failed to meet their needs and have made them feel more vulnerable and invisible.”

With a body of research spanning two decades, he has worked across issues such as homelessness, youth justice, child protection, residential care, young carers, and child sexual abuse prevention.

During his time at Australian Centre for Child Protection at University of South Australia, his most research focused on family violence, young caring and younger parents.

Associate Professor Moore has provided advice to several inquiries and Commissions and shaped local, national and international initiatives to improve the lives of children, young people and their families.

His work for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse helped form child safe practices and organisations – work he will continue at ICPS.
