Sports Performance, Recovery, Injury and New Technologies (SPRINT) Research Centre director David Opar says there’s no “magic bullet” when it comes to strengthening the hamstrings of high performance athletes.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Dr Opar said their evidence-based approach could minimise but not eliminate the risk of injury.
Manly’s Tom Trbojevic and Kieran Foran, and former Wests Tigers half Josh Reynolds are among a handful of NRL players who have worked with SPRINT’s hamstring experts Dr Opar, Ryan Timmins and Jack Hickey who use ultrasound and surface electromyography to measure the structure and activity of the hamstring muscles before devising suitable strengthening programs.
Dr Opar said during the past decade, the risk of an AFL player reinjuring his hamstring during the season had dropped from about 33 per cent to well below 20 per cent.
