Vince Geiger was recently invited to present the Clements-Foyster Lecture at the annual conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) – the peak body for this discipline in the region. The Clements-Foyster Lecture honors the founders of MERGA and invitations are only extended to Australasians who are internationally recognized researchers in the field of mathematics education. Vince spoke about his development as a researcher by using Valsiner’s Zone Theory as an analytical lens to reflect on his personal biography. The lecture also drew on the notions of identity within communities of practice. This included discussion of his failures as well as successes. The lecture concluded with advice about key aspects of researcher development across the span of a career.
