This naturalistic prospective study by Professor Clarence Ng from ACU’s ILSTE, provides a dynamic account showing how students’ perezhivanija (emotional lived experiences) mediate subject choice plans and decisions. This study adds new knowledge to research on subject choice in mathematics, highlighting subject choice as an experience-based and emotion-infused process fraught with uncertainties, doubts and contradictions. This longitudinal investigation traced, over three years, the perezhivanija of mathematics learning of two achieving students from low income families in Australia and examined how their perezhivanija contributed to their subject choice plans and decisions. The findings challenge a linear conceptualisation of subject choice as a decision made at a specific point of time predictable by cognitive and social variables.
