Professor Mogens Niss is an international collaborator with the Institute for Learning Sciences and Teacher Education on a maths research project. This ARC project seeks to identify, apply and refine teaching approaches that help secondary students learn how to use mathematics to solve real world problems. The researchers are ACU’s Professor Vincent Geiger, Associate Professor Gloria Stillman, Dr Jill Brown (Deakin), Honorary Professor Peter Galbraith (UQ) and Professor Mogens Niss (Roskilde University, Denmark).
The ILSTE recently hosted a meeting between Prof Mogens Niss (Roskilde University, Denmark), Prof Peter Galbraith (The University of Queensland) and Prof Vince Geiger (ACU) for the purpose of progressing research on an ARC funded project - Using mathematics to solve real world problems: The role of enablers. Professor Niss is a Partner Investigator on this research. The project aims to identify, apply and refine teaching approaches that help secondary students learn how to use mathematics to solve real world problems including using the processes of mathematical modelling. Potential benefits of the research include successful student engagement in a range of school subjects, enhanced career options (e.g., STEM), informed participation in society, and international economic competitiveness in a world undergoing rapid technological and economic change. He is a past Secretary General of the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction (ICMI). Prof Niss became Denmark’s first royal Professor in Mathematics and Mathematics Education in 1993 based on his contribution to education and his standing in the international mathematics education community.
