Prue Cormie among leaders in exercise and sports science
Leading exercise oncology expert Prue Cormie has been named as one of Exercise & Sports Science Australia’s three top female leaders in 2018.
Announced on International Women’s Day, the accolade sees Associate Professor Cormie recognised for her outstanding research, advocacy and passion in exercise oncology.
Professor Cormie, from the Mary Mackillop Institute for Health Research, was instrumental in launching the Australian first EX-MED Cancer program, a free exercise program for cancer patients designed to help with the side effects of treatment, increase quality of life and improve survival.
ESSA chief executive officer Anita Hobson-Powell said Professor Cormie’s extensive work with patients, government and the community had highlighted the important role of accredited exercise physiologists in cancer care.
“Prue is a role model and inspiration to those working within exercise oncology,” she said.
“Her research, advocacy and passion in exercise oncology has brought it to the attention of many doctors, patients and in the media.”
Professor Cormie said she was honoured to be recognised as a top female leader in exercise and sports science.
“It is an award made possible by and shared with my amazing team,” she said.
“I love what I do and feel so privileged to be able to work towards enhancing the lives of people with cancer through exercise.”
She joins Dr Cecilia Kitic, founder of The IVF project, and Miss Esme Soan who has championed exercise physiology in women’s health in the top three.
