In 2017, the Hon. Dyson Heydon AC QC delivered the inaugural PM Glynn Lecture on Religion, Law and Public Life on Religious ‘toleration’ in modern Australia: the tyranny of relativism. Today’s Tyrants contains this lecture together with a set of essays intended to continue the discussion that the lecture began.
In this volume, essayists, Fr Frank Brennan SJ, Anne Henderson, Paul Kelly, Michael Casey, Rev. Peter Kurti, M. J. Crennan QC, Professor Hayden Ramsay, Shireen Morris, Professor Michael Ondaatje and Professor Sandra Lynch respond to Heydon’s lecture. The Hon. John Fahey AC, Chancellor of ACU, provided the foreword. The collection comprises a number of perspectives on Heydon’s central claim that contemporary calls for “tolerance” – particularly those directed at Christianity – are actually often demands for ”unconditional surrender”.
Today’s Tyrants was published in 2018 by Kapunda Press and launched at the offices of Corrs Chambers Westgarth by the Hon. Alexander Downer AC on 29 April 2019.
