Chalice of Liberty is a contribution to the public debate surrounding the Ruddock Expert Panel’s 2017-18 review of religious freedom in Australia.
The publication comprises two essays. The first essay, by Fr Frank Brennan SJ and Michael Casey, draws on the Catholic tradition to explain why freedom of religion remains vital for the way of life enjoyed in a secular liberal democracy such as Australia. Emeritus Professor Greg Craven complements Brennan and Casey’s philosophical analysis in the second essay discussing how freedom of religion is currently protected in Australia, and what reforms are necessary so that its protection in the future may be guaranteed.
Chalice of Liberty was published in 2018 by the Kapunda Press and was launched by the Australian Human Rights Commissioner, Edward Santow at a reception hosted at the offices of Gilbert and Tobin in Sydney on 26 March 2018.
